  • If you see anyone committing vandalism, report it to the police, school authorities, or someone who can take action.
  • Remember, vandalism is a crime.
  • Protect your house or apartment from vandalism by using good lighting and locking gates and garages.
  • Support recreational programs for young people in your community. Volunteer your time, donate money or supplies, and help in any way you can.

Crime Prevention Tips

Pickpocket

What can you do to protect yourself? The best protection is to eliminate the opportunity of becoming a victim in the first place.

Tips for Men

  • The target areas are back trouser pockets, and suitcoat and sports jacket pockets, located both inside and out. A pickpocket generally avoids front trouser pockets, and especially buttoned or zippered pockets.
  • Never pat your pocket to see if your wallet is there; this lets a criminal know the exact location of your valuables.
  • Larger-size “pocket secretaries” are particularly inviting to pickpockets, and relatively easy to steal.

Tips for Women

  • Do not carry your wallet in your purse. Conceal it in a buttoned or zippered pocket where it doesn’t show a bulge.
  • Never leave your purse unattended on a store counter or in a grocery shopping cart.
  • Use a purse that is difficult to open. A purse with a zipper or snaps is best.

Fire Prevention

In view of the Lunar Seventh Month, the SCDF would like to remind members of the public to exercise greater caution when conducting religious activities such as the burning of incense papers and joss sticks, which are expected to increase.

2.         Here are a few simple fire safety tips to help minimize potential hazards during this period:

Fire Safety Advisories:

a.    For public housing estates, always burn incense paper in the incense burners or metal containers provided by the Town Councils.  Private residential owners are also encouraged to use incense paper burners.

b.    The burners or containers should be placed on sturdy ground and at a safe distance away from combustible materials and locations such as the switch room or other residential premises.

c.    Check the area for smouldering incense or embers and make sure that the fires are completely put out before leaving.

d.    Avoid throwing lighted materials such as candles and matches onto grass patches and fields as these may inadvertently start a fire.
